Like all cars you really need to decide what you want from a car before you hand over your hard-earned readies and find yourself driving something that’s not what you want. In the case of the Holden Cruze it’s probably even more important. From a distance the cute Cruze has all the looks of a compact four-wheel drive, but the closer you get to it you discover it lacks the credibility of an off-roader, and anyone buying it for that purpose is going to be disappointed.

Just as wounds from the Pontiac G8 being ripped from us are beginning to scar over, HSV has torn them open anew by revealing version 2.0 of its Commodore-based E Series lineup. It's facelifts all around for the gang of Aussie stoplight brawlers, four of which – The GTS, Maloo R8, ClubSport R8 and ClubSport R8 Tourer – even get the erstwhile Poncho's twin-scoop hood. The more luxurious Senator Signature and long-wheelbase Grange models have smooth hoods and less overall ornamentation. Either one would have made a sublime performance Buick, but oh well...

Built from 1974 through 1980, the Holden Sandman was and still is a cultural icon in its native Australia, one tied in with the mores of the 1970s and its vibrant subculture of carefree youth, surfing, and sex (the Melbourne Age newspaper once described it as "the only car ever built specifically for the purpose of sex").(from Holden Press Release) Holden’s light-hearted retro tribute to the iconic Sandman surfmobile of the seventies was created in collaboration with surf and streetwear company, Mambo. Its ‘Bushfire’ custom paint finish, beach and bush goddess murals complete with native fauna and luxurious rear ‘chill out zone’ attracted plenty of attention from Detroit showgoers, says Holden’s Executive In Charge Of Design, Michael Simcoe.

I see a big difference between retaining styling cues (good!) and copying (bad). I think the Camaro does a terrific job of taking classic Camaro style and modernizing it perfectly. It doesn't look retro. It looks like what a proper evolution for the model should look like. The cues are all there, and people who care would know what it was even without badges (ignore the people from the "What is the stupidest thing people have said about your Camaro thread) yet you wouldn't mistake it for being anything other than a 2010 model either. The Challenger, on the other hand, shows zero originality or modernity. It looks stuck in the past. The Camaro aged well, with confidence, knowing it was great in the past, and is still great now. The Challenger, on the other hand, is Uncle Rico.

While its knife-edged surfaces and aerodynamic form were largely inspired by the experimental Hurricane, the GTR-X represented a serious attempt to build a low volume, high visibility sports model using inexpensive tooling and stock mechanical parts.

At its announcement in August 1970, a month after the launch of the redoubtable Torana GTR XU-1, GMH said it was "breaking with tradition by giving the public an opportunity to see in advance a car which could be the basis of a limited production vehicle in the future...the GTR-X has been built specifically to test design concepts and help assess the Australian market for a locally designed and manufactured two-seater sports car."

Built to brand aerospace technology with their image, Holden of Australia commissioned this radical concept in the 1960s. At that time, Hurricane was one of the most expensive experimental cars, and helped the company sell one million cars from 1969 to 1974.

Finding the ''feasibility of applying aerospace techniques and materials to the manufacture of future Holdens'' was the companies' motivation for the project. However, this rhetoric held little weight, and only the production-worthy engine found its way into the road cars. With this engine, the Hurricane started a trend that would have 500 000 Holden's feature Australian-designed V8s.
